Semester #2: Finishing Magnetic Control Devices

Welcome to semester 2.

In semester two we will be trying to complete the following modules:

Magnetic Control Device

AutoCAD Inventor

Final Robotics Challenge (Autonomous)

Today we will begin Magnetic Control Device by going over all of the theory on Relays.

After that there will be a short assignment that must be submitted to your assignment folder.

February Schedule

February 2nd: Finish Magnetic Theory assignment/videos

February 8th: Hands On Demo and Assignment with MecLab #1

February 16th: Hands On Demo and Assignment with MecLab #2

February 23th: Hands On Demo and Assignment with MecLab #3

These sessions are mandatory to earn this credit.

Assignment: How Do Relays Work

Theory Activity    /10 (9 questions + 1 mark for proper naming and location of file)

Watch the videos in the post: "Theory: How Do Relays Work?"

These questions should be copied into a new assignment named "Magnetic Control Device Theory"

These questions are due by Friday February 5th at 2:00PM.

What is an Inductor?

Explain what an inductor is in your own words.

What is the electrical symbol for an inductor?

What is a Relay?

What is a switch?

How does a relay switch differ from a manual switch?

What is the difference between a single-throw and a double throw relay?

What is the difference between a single-break and double-break switch?

What is a Solid State Relay?

What is the difference between a solid state and electromagnetic relay?

What are the advantages of a solid state relay?

Solenoid Basics - Part 1

What is the relationship between current (amperage) and the amount of force a solenoid can exhibit?

Lab Schedule During Exam Break

Here is the final schedule for the exam break:

This is the schedule for room 238/239(Robotics)

Wednesday January 13th - Friday January 15th: Lab open from 12:15-4:00PM
Monday January 18th - Friday January 22nd: Lab open from 9:00AM-4:00PM
Monday January 25th: Lab open from 9:00AM-4:00PM

It is my expectation that everyone tries to finish the MecLab duotang (red duotang) by the end of the exam break so that I can give you a second credit in this class.

Final marks are due on January 25th, so anything done before that date will be accepted with no penalty.
